a Dios

en Covid-19

Este título puede sonar extraño, pues apunta a una paradoja que muchos encontrarían escandalosa. Todos estamos bajo diferentes estados mentales, emocionales y espirituales, que van desde la esperanza hasta la desesperación. Para aquellos de nosotros que experimentamos impotencia y desesperación frente a este virus, quiero pensar con vosotros que Dios está presente en este Coronavirus. El misterio de la Encarnación significa que Dios, que siempre estuvo omnipresente y caminó con su Pueblo en su camino desde Egipto, finalmente selló su presencia entre nosotros convirtiéndose en plenamente humano. Una de las condiciones para ser humano es el aspecto de la enfermedad. Aunque las Escrituras no mencionan que Él mismo se enfermó, cuentan muchas curaciones de personas enfermas, a manos de Jesús. Tenemos que decir, como gente que cree, que Dios es consciente de Coronavirus y no está dormido ni indiferente. Harold Kushner escribió una vez un libro con un título inquietante 'CUANDO LAS COSAS MALAS PASAN A BUENAS PERSONAS' en el que describe lo que vemos con este virus; tanta gente sufriendo y muriendo. Todos ellos gente normal y buena. ¿Puede salir algo bueno de esto? No soy Dios, y diré lo que sigue con mucha humildad e ignorancia. También tengo muchas preguntas sin respuesta.

En Isaías 65:17-21 se nos dice que Dios está haciendo un nuevo cielo y una tierra nueva

17 Porque miren, voy a crear nuevos cielos y una tierra nueva, y el pasado no será recordado y no vendrá más a la mente. 18 Prefiero estar alegre. Alégrate por siempre de lo que estoy creando, porque mira, estoy creando Jerusalén para ser ciudad alegre y un pueblo contento que viva en ella. 19 Estaré gozoso en Jerusalén y me alegraré de mi pueblo. Ya no se escuchará más lloro allí, ni el sonido de un grito; 20 Allí no habrá niños que mueran a los pocos días, ni ancianos que no completen su vida. 21 Construirán casas y vivirán en ellas, plantarán viñedos y comerán su fruto.

Dios a través de su Encarnación está con nosotros en nuestra lucha contra este virus. Tal vez tengamos que preguntarnos qué clase de tierra nueva y cielo está creando a través de la experiencia del Coronavirus. ¿Puede salir algo bueno de una epidemia de Coronavirus? La respuesta es sin duda un gran ¡Sí! Cualquier experiencia de enfermedad y tragedia comunica un mensaje de esperanza de Dios. Estamos en una crisis social y humana sin precedentes en la historia humana. La palabra " crisis " en griego significa " juicio " y " discreción ". Significa en la práctica " un momento de tomar una decisión ". Desde la experiencia del Coronavirus, se nos pide abrir los ojos y ver a Dios creando una nueva tierra y un cielo. ¿Estamos diciendo que Él es un Dios sádico que se complace en ver morir a la gente para dar una lección? ¡No te pierdas! La nueva tierra y el nuevo cielo deben encontrarse en lo que es positivo saliendo de esta tragedia. Os propongo algunas lecciones, que apuntan a estos signos positivos, que ayudarán a construir una nueva tierra y un nuevo cielo:

1. El encierro como un tiempo de restaurar nuestro silencio, oración y familia: hemos estado viviendo en un mundo donde la familia estaba erosionando rápido. Se estaba reduciendo a una mera convivencia de personas bajo la misma habitación pero viviendo sus vidas fuera (trabajo, deportes, compras, vacaciones, etc). Vivíamos bajo el mismo techo y apenas nos comunicábamos. Con los bloqueos y quedarse en casa, muchas familias de todo el mundo son capaces de conocerse incluso en la medida de irritarse mutuamente. Ahora somos capaces de enfrentarnos, conversar, cocinar y conocernos más. No podemos permitirnos escapar el uno del otro. Si salimos de este Coronavirus con un nuevo mensaje de que la familia es más importante que todas las distracciones externas, Dios será capaz de crear una nueva tierra y el cielo entre nosotros

2. Una humanidad humillada: Ahora vemos que la humanidad se había vuelto demasiado segura de sí misma. Los países ricos protegidos por sistemas de salud bien desarrollados consideraron que estaban seguros. Ya no están tan seguros de eso. Estos países se enfrentan ahora a una de las peores crisis sanitarias conocidas en la historia moderna. Sus sistemas de salud no son capaces de salvar las muchas vidas que este virus está reclamando. Algunos han llegado al límite de aceptar la ayuda de países que consideraban pobres. De esto, Dios nos dice que nunca estamos a salvo con las últimas tecnologías médicas modernas alrededor. La humanidad ha sido humillada. No somos una super carrera después de todo. Dándonos cuenta de ello, debemos redescubrir el lugar de Dios en la humanidad. Si lo hacemos, Dios podrá ayudarnos a encontrar nuestro lugar adecuado en la civilización. Algunos han redescubierto la religión, y a Dios, después de haberlo perdido por su orgullo, por su excesiva confianza en el poder de la ciencia.

3. Sistemas de atención de la salud descuidada: nuestras sociedades africanas ahora están muy asustadas porque en los últimos 50 años muchos gobiernos africanos han descuidado sus sistemas de atención médica. Sus líderes siempre han escapado para tener un mejor tratamiento afuera, dejando a sus compatriotas muriendo en hospitales mal financiados y equipados. Con el Coronavirus, presidentes, actores, príncipes y ricos de África no tienen a dónde correr. Si aprendemos algo de esto, Dios va a crear una nueva tierra y un nuevo cielo. Nuestros líderes ahora necesitan centrarse en construir hospitales de última generación y fortalecer nuestros sistemas de atención a la salud. Colectivamente debemos admitir que durante los últimos 50 años hemos desperdiciado muchos recursos que estaban destinados a la atención de la salud.

4. Las iglesias cerradas son ahora comunes en todo el mundo: Por primera vez la casa de Dios está ahora 'fuera de límites'. ¿Qué está diciendo Dios a través de esto? La hermana Teresa Okure de Nigeria tiene esta reflexión y mensaje a las personas que se sienten perdidas ahora que las iglesias en algunas partes no están teniendo Misa ni otras oraciones o devociones públicas "¿Quién es la Iglesia? ¿Qué es la Iglesia? ¿Nuestro diario ir a la iglesia los domingos nos hace verdaderamente Iglesia, cuerpo de Cristo, familia de Dios? ¿O una congregación de personas que vienen a cantar, bailar, sentirse bien; para luego abandonar la iglesia sin conectarse entre sí, sin conocerse y cuidarse?" "El cierre de las iglesias puede ser el camino de Dios de pedirnos que volvamos a nuestras raíces, a nuestras raíces escriturísticas sobre lo que significa ser Iglesia. Nos invita a hacer un esfuerzo lleno de fe para creer que en Dios vivimos, avanzamos y tenemos nuestro ser" Si reflexionamos sobre esto podemos decir que Dios está creando una nueva tierra y un nuevo cielo dentro de nosotros.

5. Nuestros niveles de higiene se están poniendo en tela de juicio: ahora somos conscientes de que llevamos virus en nuestras manos y cuerpo y que las prácticas antihigiénicas generan enfermedades. Como malawíes y africanos, ya es hora de que aprendamos a estar limpios y cuidarnos de nosotros mismos y de los demás. Cuando miramos cómo nos comportamos en las iglesias, en funerales, bodas, mercados abiertos, tiendas, supermercados, tenemos que decir que hemos sido salvados meramente por la gracia de Dios. ¿Qué estamos aprendiendo de todo este lavado de manos que tenemos que hacer? ¿Cómo nos comportamos los sacerdotes y fieles en la iglesia? ¿Vamos a permanecer como antes con nuestros hábitos antihigiénicos? Es hora de que permitamos crear una nueva tierra y un nuevo cielo dentro de nosotros en términos de higiene y prevención de enfermedades transmisibles.

Finding God in Covid-19

This title may sound strange but it points to a paradox that many would find scandalous. We are all under different mental, emotional and spiritual states, ranging from hope to despair. For those of us experiencing helplessness and despair in front of this virus let us know that God is present in this Coronavirus. The mystery of the Incarnation means that God who was always omnipresent and walked with his people on their way from Egypt, finally sealed his presence among us by becoming fully human. One of the conditions for being human is the aspect of sickness. Though the Scriptures do not mention that He himself got sick, they recount many healings of sick people at the hands of Jesus. We have to say that as people who believe, God is aware of Coronavirus and he is not asleep or indifferent. Harold Kushner once wrote a book with a disturbing title ' WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE' in which he describes what we see with this virus; so many people suffering and dying. All of them ordinary and good people. Can anything good come out this? I am not God and so what I say will be said with much humility and ignorance. I also have many unanswered questions.

In Isaiah 65:17-21 we are told that God is making a new heaven and a new earth

17 For look, I am going to create new heavens and a new earth, and the past will not be remembered and will come no more to mind.18 Rather be joyful, be glad for ever at what I am creating, for look, I am creating Jerusalem to be 'Joy' and my people to be 'Gladness'.19 I shall be joyful in Jerusalem and I shall rejoice in my people. No more will the sound of weeping be heard there, nor the sound of a shriek;20 never again will there be an infant there who lives only a few days, nor an old man who does not run his full course; for the youngest will die at a hundred, and at a hundred the sinner will be accursed.21 They will build houses and live in them, they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

God through his Incarnation is with us in our fight against this virus. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves what kind of a new earth and heaven he is creating through the experience of the Coronavirus. Can anything good come out of a Coronavirus epidemic? The answer is certainly a big YES! Any experience of sickness and tragedy communicates a message of hope from God. We are in a social and human crisis unprecedented in human history. The word ‘ crisis’ in Greek means ‘ judgment’ and ‘discretion’ It means in practice ‘ a time of making a decision’. From the experience of the Coronavirus, we are asked to open our eyes and see God creating a new earth and heaven. Are we saying that He is a sadist God who takes pleasure in seeing people die so as to give a lesson? No. The new earth and heaven must be found in what is positive coming out of this tragedy. The following seem to be some lessons that are pointing at these positive signs that will eventually bring out a new earth and heaven:

1. The Lockdown as a time of restoring our silence, prayer and family: we have been living in a world where family was eroding fast. It was being reduced to a mere coexistence of people under the same room but living their lives outside (work, sports, shopping, holidays etc). We were living under the same roof and hardly communicating. With the lockdowns and staying at home, many families across the globe are able to know each other even to the extent of irritating each other. We are now able to face each other, converse, cook and know each other more. We cannot afford to escape from each other. If we come out of this Coronavirus with a new message that family is more important that all external distractions, God will be able to create a new earth and heaven among us

2. A humbled Humanity: We now see that humanity had become too sure of itself. Rich countries protected by well developed health systems felt that they were safe. They are no more sure of that. These countries are now facing one of the worst health crisis known in modern history. Their health systems are not able to save the many lives this virus is claiming. Some have reached the extent of accepting help from countries that they considered as poor. From this God is telling us that we are never safe with the latest modern medical technologies around. Humanity has been humbled. We are not a super race after all. From this realization we need to rediscover the place of God in humanity. If we do so, God will be able to help us find our proper place in civilization. Some have discovered religion and God after losing it through their pride and too much trust in the power of science.

3. Neglected Health Care Systems: Our African societies now are very much scared because over the past 50 years many African governments have neglected their health care systems. Their leaders have always escaped to have better treatment outside, leaving their compatriots dying in poorly funded and equipped hospitals. With the Coronavirus, Presidents, actors, princes and the rich of Africa have nowhere to run to with this Coronavirus. If we learn something from this, God is going to create a new earth and heaven, our leaders now need to focus on building state of the art hospitals and strengthening our health care systems. Collectively we must admit that for the past 50 years we have wasted a lot of resources that were meant for health care

4. The closed churches are now common across the globe: For the first time the house of God is now ‘ off limits’. What is God saying through this. Sister Teresa Okure from Nigeria has this reflection and message to people who feel lost now that churches in some parts are not having Mass and other public prayers and devotions ‘“Who is the church? What is the church? Does our daily going to church on Sundays make us truly the church, body of Christ, family of God? Or a congregation of people coming to sing, dance, feel good; then leave the church without connecting with each other, knowing each other and caring for each other even during the Mass?” “The closure of the churches may be God’s way of asking us to return to our roots, to our scriptural roots about what it means to be church. It invites us to make faith-filled effort to believe that in God we live and move and have our being. No door can be closed to our reaching God and to God reaching us.” If we reflect on this we can say that God is creating a new earth and heaven within us.

5. Our levels of hygiene are now being put into question: We are now aware that we carry viruses on our hands and body and that unhygienic practices breed diseases. As Malawians and Africans it is high time we learnt to be clean and take care of ourselves and others. When we look at how we behave in churches, at funerals, weddings, open markets, shops, supermarkets, we have to say that we have been saved merely by the grace of God. What are we learning from all this washing of hands that we have to do? How do we priests and faithful conduct ourselves in church? Are we going to remain as before with our unhygienic habits? It is time that we allow create a new earth and heaven within us in terms of hygiene and prevention of communicable diseases.
